Post Graduate Students from BSU Visit Gamma Irradiation Facility.
On the 3rd and 4th of May, 2021, some Post Graduate Students and a Senior Lecturer from Benue State University had a two day excursion/Facility visit to the GIF. The Head of GIF led the the visiting students round the facility and its laboratories on a sensitization tour on the application and uses of the GIF. After the tour, some staff of the GIF took turns to present papers to the visitors covering Irradiation technology: Applications and Advantages, Radiation processing for food preservation and proximate Analysis: Concepts, Theory and Protocol.
On the second day and concluding part of the 2-Day visit, two papers were presented. First was on Radiation Processing for Food Preservation and the second on Radiation Accidents in Industrial and Medical Facilities. After which the students were taken to one of the laboratories for a 2 hour practical on Proximate Analysis.
Immediately after practical session, the Assistant Director and Acting Head of GIF, Engineer TK Mustapha led the PG students, their coordinator and some senior members of staff of the GIF to pay a courtesy call on the Acting Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAEC, Professor Yusuf Aminu Ahmed at the head office at Asokoro. The Chairman received the delegation from sheda at the conference room and thanked the students and their coordinator for the facility visit challenging them to also use their findings during the facility visit to the GIF to find ways to optimize on existing research and development in the areas of the application of Irradiation technology and related fields. He also advised the coordinator of the PG students to liaise with the authorities of Benue State University to come up with a draft copy of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the university and NAEC as soon as possible for possible agreements in the area of R&D that will be beneficial to the university and NAEC.
